I know I could add a couple cache drives, but I'd much rather have performance without having to deal with additional things like cache to add. I keep reading about sub 40-50MB/sec writes, and that just really worries me. I was wondering, if anyone could chime in on the consistency of say, dragging and dropping a large file from Windows (whatever file type, 8GB mkv file, 40GB Hard drive image) and if the performance is relatively consistent? I consistently can Read/Write at 112MB/sec to it.

(I'm not talking small files, because aside from doing occasional folder copies, the majority is moving large multi-gigabyte files, or imaging my hard drives over to it.) Fully maxes out my gigabit for Reading and Writing files. I have 4 x 3TB WD Reds but am running out of room, I also don't want to have to buy 4 x 5TB or 6TB just to gain more space, and keep doing that every couple years. Currently I have a QNAP TS-469L which has been absolutely amazing. The system I'm looking to build will have:Īnd likely 8 or 16 GB of ECC memory to start.

Unraid for the flexibility of simply adding another drive to expand storage, and FreeNAS for better data security (but being a massive pain when it comes to adding more drive, if I have an array of 4 disks, I'd have to replace em one by one, or add another array of 4 more disks to expand.) I just wanted to say first and foremost, I've done so much reading, and searching beforehand, and am torn between building something towards FreeNAS or something towards unRAID.
